Background

India is home to close to 13 million child labourers. This project aims to work with the “Dalit” community in four villages in Salem, Tamil Nadu. The “Dalit” caste has been discriminated for centuries in rural India as people who are “untouchable”. In the past, they have been subjected to working as labourers carrying out tasks such as unclogging sewers, disposing of dead bodies and cleaning toilets.

In the target villages, the communities, including women and children have been suppressed from receiving basic education. They are forced to work in stone quarries, agricultural lands and plantations for a meagre wage. They work as families to one land owner for generations.

Type of Support

We along with our partner project, the Society for Rural Health and Development (SRHD) aim to break this cycle and provide the children who are working with their families’ a brighter future. Forced to work with their parents, these children have been denied the opportunity to develop in mainstream education and promote and protect their own rights.

Big Hug's Impact

We are working in collaboration with SRHD to:

  • Rescue children stuck in child labour and enrol them in to government schools
  • Create after school centres to rehabilitate them and support their education
  • Introduce the children to basic health education
  • Educate the children and parents on children’s rights and child labour
  • As the children’s parents are uneducated, after-school centres will be created to support the children in their education, homework, revision for exams etc.
