Big Hug Foundation provides shelter, education, food and healthcare to underprivileged children in India.

The Jugnu Pre-School and Nutrition Programme is an educational project for disadvantaged slum children living 'below the poverty line'. The programme provides families who cannot afford to send their children to the local nurseries or montessori's. Before Jugnu began, the children were not receiving any form of education and would play in vulnerable environments with a high risk of malnutrition and disease.

Type of Support:

Jugnu is a service which provides a pre-school programme to disadvantaged children from neighbouring slums. The children attend the pre-school from Monday to Friday, 2.30 – 4.30pm. In India, government schooling begins at the age of 6 and as the parents cannot afford to send their children to Montessori’s or nurseries, during the day the children are hanging about the slums in very vulnerable, un-hygienic surroundings.

In addition to teaching the children, twice a month the teachers hold a parents afternoon, where they explain to the parents what is being taught to their children. They educate the parents on topics such as health and hygiene so that what the children are learning at Jugnu is being continued at home.

Big Hug’s impact:

Through this programme the children are given a ‘head start’ in their education by being exposed to a range of preschool activities which help develop their cognitive, social and language skills. Whilst at the centre the children are given a nutritious meal, and are educated on topics such as health and hygiene.

Parnter Project::

We recently formed a partnership with the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP), based in Kolkata, West Bengal. IICP is a non-government organization which supports over 1500 children and young people in Kolkata and the surrounding areas. We are pleased to announce, this year, Big Hug will be supporting two of their projects, the Jugnu Pre-School and Nutrition Programme (children aged 2-6 years) and The Early Intervention Clinic (infants aged 0-2 years).

Below are some photos of the children in their homes in the slum areas as well as at the Jugnu project. Click on an image to enlarge it.
